I grew up in Watertown. It always surprises me when something "newsworthy" happens there. This time it makes me sad as well.

So I can run the world/state/town/community but not teach a Sunday School Class?

Hey. Maybe this isn't so bad...

Right.

The church board said there were "other issues" around her dismissal. My guess? She refused to get with the fundamentalist program.

Oy! I know this type. My brother is one of them. They'd fire their own mothers from teaching Sunday School to keep to their literal interpretation. Sad......

Ooo...one more thing. What's really funny to me is that one of the great leaders of the fundamentalist take over of the SBC was a pastor of a big church in Dallas. His wife taught a SS class that drew 300+ people every week, at least half of them adult males. They said she could do it because she was under the authority of her husband. So maybe the other issue with Grandma in Watertown is that she's widowed and doesn't have a husband whose authority she can be under. Twisted! It really scares me that I know this much about how they think!

Shows what comes of not reading all of scripture--just excerpting parts of it.

My question is this: did they not notice she was female for the first 54 years?

Let's all sing along:
"If I could turn back ti-ime..."

Molly, I told you not to visit my friend's blogs. Sheesh.
The worst thing about this story is how foolish it makes church people seem. The canard about "other issues" is just that. The talking heads on CNN were *hooting* about it this morning. "Yeah, talking about a problem wouldn't be 'Christian,' would it? Hardeharhar." Yes, it makes one feel proud.

i hear she's already got other offers to teach, you go girl

Would they take her back if she got "reassignment" surgery? Nothing unbiblical 'bout that.

Really really sad.

Did this lady just start showing off that she's a woman? 'Cause that will get you fired...

Know someone from a church like this who feels called. Wonder what they'll think when she's teaching religion at a college with a PhD under her belt.
