Yeah, I'm with ppb...he was trying to accord you dignity in advance of your tender years!It just doesn't happen here, in any circumstances (except, maybe, for sales assistants in old fashioned department stores!)
See, I always thought that ma'am was just a form of respect to an adult, no matter what the age.
Just being Southern.We call everyone over 80 "girl" and say "m'am" to toddlers.Go figure.
I was first ma'amed at a grocery store when I was hmm probably about 19.....wasn't really sure how to take that...I was still technically a teenager!
