Comeuppance

I just got my ass kicked in a Muscles in Motion class.

In other news, the 104 year old 'new' administrative assistant has told me that Friday will be her last day. I tease, but I respect her. She tried really hard, but it was all just too much (I had to spend time explaining the difference between 'delete' 'backspace' and 'space bar').

We have had three admins in a year (4 if you include an interim).
The first resigned the Friday before Holy Week 2006.
The second left for a full time postion on December 1 - right before Advent.
And now this one leaves the Friday before Holy Week 2007.

I know there is a punch line in there somewhere but right now my head is spinning so fast with the church 'to do' list that I cannot think of it.

Um...I've got an extra, who will be free as of Thursday. She requires about one sick day off a week, and she likes to take vacation at the last minute the week before Christmas (by just walking in at the very last second and announcing she won't be available that week), and she spends most of her time on her cell phone.

But she understands the keyboard.

I'm feeling your pain, sister.

I know I left a comment here. It was something about volunteers. Never mind. I can't seem to find the backspace key.

can I come work for you? I know my spacebar from the backspace --but if you want REAL typing I need plenty of typex :)

My commutes a bit far, but I do work hard ... mostly ... but in fairness I need to confess to one slight problem

I'm addicted to RevGals blogs - if they would only stop writing, I'd get more done. Honest!

Okay. here's the plan. I take the job. You pay me LOTS of money. We laugh all day and read blogs and I tell everyone who calls that you are out visiting.

It's good plan.

Why can't the pastor's wife just type the bulletin for you? It wouldn't take but a minute between hosting the women's circle and baking pies for the youth group. Then you wouldn't have to pay her!

In all seriousness, I was once the world's worst church secretary. I mean it. The worst. I was a summer replacement, and everyone was very, very glad when the summer was over. Especially the congregation, who had to read "those who are abe, please stand."

listing straight, you're hired!

Ummm, by lots of money you meant $10 p/hour for 16 hours p/week, right?

Oofdah, Cheesehead. Oof! Dah!

I am getting a bit of a Murphy Brown rep, but they were spoiled for years when a member of the church did it for years for a dreadfully low salary. Now they can't understand why someone wouldn't want to do this but it is just not enough hours to justify the salary for most people.

sigh...

Maybe you could split the job? Mornings for a stay at home mom with kids in school and afternoons for a retired person?

Ah QG, 'spoken' like someone who goes to a big church.

It is only four hours p/day, 4 days p/week in the morning for a grand total of 16 hours.

I have always thought that this would be the perfect job for someone with school age children who just wanted a part time something while the kids were occupied. But we are not exactly over-populated out here and although I am sure there is someone in town who fits that description, the drive out here is not worth the $.

I got a russian orthodox choir director who has an opinion about everything, thinks she is part of the worship staff and constantly tries to convince me her theology is right and mine is wrong. She needs most of Holy Week off, tells me what to do, and at this minute is frustrated that the bulletin is different this week because of Palm Sunday. Want her? I think I'm within a several hour drive. I'll leave her in your office. Seriously though, you are in my prayers as you make your to do list. Is there a college student home for spring break who could help?

Wow, guess they can't handle the pressure of High Holy Days and Seasons. What a shame!! Really awful time to be without admin support. Prayers are with you.
The image that comes to mind if you were a painting is Muench's "The Scream"!!! Screaming with you!!!!! (while praying that God will provide and provide for your sanity.)

Oh LORD...Assistants. Can't do with them can't do without them. Ours is a sweetheart, and a good friend but even she tends to sound hurt and confused when its suggested that immediately before a Festival is quite a busy time,so it would be good if she didn't plan holidays then..But we're what is classed as a medium sized church here (200 communicants most Sundays) which I realise is a miniscule church for y0u - so the job is 8 hours per week. Definitely only pin money.

Sadly, as we work together today I realize that her leaving will help me retain my sanity even though it is on paper a bad time.

Exhibit A -
Her: I want to make a copy of this.
Me: Okay, just place it there and then press the green button.
Her: Are you sure?

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yes. i'm sure.

Oh, this is just so wrong in so many ways. My sympathies. Our church secretary is on holidays right now, but she's back on Sunday and we're all set for Easter. I wish she could stop by your place on the way home to help you out.

Could some of the work be structured to fit a student's schedule and abilities? Maybe a high school student would like a small job. It might not fit for all the responsibilities, but maybe some of them.

We require just ten hours a week. Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday 3.5/3/3.5 hours. And we pay $12/hour

Any takers?

Yikes.
I think I worked with her before.

Just watch out for the red button! I you are paying lots and lots of money, I'll take the job. I'm a genius with the copier!

And you said "ass"....heeeheee

FWIW ... with Cheesehead and Will Smama both having problems with Admins, I'm thinking of going into an outsoucing business.

"Your Church Bulletin" ... professionally created, then emailed right to your inbox ready for printing.

What do you think ??

those hs students will be able to do amazing things for you. run circles right around everyone of us on the computer!

There's always someone worse off than yourself. Our last admin was into booze and drugs, caused a ruckus at the church, and made a formal complaint to Presbytery. After six months, the investigation has just been closed.

We're still dealing with the aftershock and picking up the pieces.

Stushie, wow. Folks we have our winner and my condolences. So sorry you all went throught that.
