Bubbles

At yesterday's church picnic I won a Beta fish. It came complete with tank and food, although the tank is small and I might cave and get it something bigger.

Yesterday I asked The Boy to name it. To prod him I would name possible 2.5 year old suggestions: 'Nemo', 'Rocket', 'Leo'. At each one of those he exclaimed "Yes!" but not to name the fish that but rather to watch that particular program on tv.

I stopped asking.

This morning he asked for me to sit with him and I told him I needed to let the dog out and feed the fish. "Feed Bubbles?" he asked while pointing to the fish.

"Oh. We named the fish Bubbles?"

"Yes. Bubbles is the fish."

Let it be so.

Awesome! My son's first Beta was named "Ahhhhred." Yup. He was red.
I love it!

We have a Beta fish at work (Yankee Candle) and he lives in a pretty small space and seems to like it. We've had him since last January. He is red and his name is Mac (as in Macintosh - like the candle). In any case, I think in general, Betas like smaller living spaces.

I have one on my desk at work, too. He's in a 1 or 2 gallon bowl with some nice gravel and some fake plants. I think that since the go to the top to breathe they need an open top... Or at least that's what the guy at Petsmart told me.

It's a good low-maitnenace fish- they reall don't like or need filters and air pumps and the like.

Anyway, his name is Mortimer.

Enjoy!

Bubbles is a good name. I think they are pretty hardy fish too. I've killed a few gold fish in my time but the betas lived on and on.

I love betas. They exude peacefulness, unless you happen to put a mirror next to the bowl. Then they turn into little warriors! My current Beta is white and named Simon. I think Bubbles sounds much more interesting! Good job Will!

That's a totally awesome name!

Just be warned--fish have a tendancy to die without warning which is tough for preschoolers. My daughter still mourns for Dorothy the goldfish.

Oh, i love those fish too! We had a whole series of them when I was a kid, and each one was named Tiger, because of the whole pretty-but-fighting thing.

Betas will also flare their loveliness if put next to another bowl with a Beta. I had one for a long time and they are so totally low maintenance.

And Bubbles is a great name!

Bob the Beta lived at our house for two years which is long for a Beta I'm told. G&T (yes the adult male, not the teenager) loved to put a mirror next to the bowl and watch Bob puff up at himself. Enjoy Bubbles. When The Boy is older there will be a whole new Boy understanding of bubbles - the one you can make in the bathtub - and I'm not talking about stuff that comes in a bottle!
